Root Canal Treatment (RCT)- Relives pain

I have heard the procedure cause severe pain? Is that true

No. its untrue.

rct is the procedurce done to provide relief from a badly paining tooth.

You’ve probably heard the old belief that root canal treatments are painful.

With modern anesthetic techniques to relieve pain, new concepts in endodontics & modern equipment rct can be done with very little/ no pain.

In fact, root canal treatment will stop the pain.

More importantly, it saves your tooth.

When do we do root canal treatment?

Tooth with any of the following complaints need rct

Tooth with a deep cavity (hole)

Painful tooth with a cavityIMG-20190302-WA0016.jpg

Tooth with cavity, swelling & pain

Discolored tooth

Broken tooth

Sensitivity to hot coffee, ice cream & cool drinks/ juices

How   long each session takes and how many visits.

Most of the cases can be done in one visit (Single visit rct). 1hr  to 90 minutes of one session.

Few teeth demand more than 1 visit which can be done in 2 or 3 visits (Multi visit rct).

Time for each appointment may range from 30-45 minutes.

Very few teeth with complications, require more than 3 visits.

Can diabetic pts go for rct

Yes. It’s  the most suitable treatment  for the diabetic patients for 2 reasons.

Because they will have more hungry compared to the normal people.

Second, tooth removal is not advisable in diabetic patients.

So it’s very important to maintain good healthy teeth to eat better.  So the need to save a damaged, paining tooth if any is a must. Since, rct relieves pain as well save the tooth, people with diabetes can undergo the procedure without a spec of doubt/ worry.

What is the latest advances in root canal treatment

Endomotor, Rotary files, Electronic Apex Locator, RVG- digital radiographs,   Magnification Loupes,  CBCT , Microscope and better anesthetic techniques.

Do we need to place a crown after root canal treatment

It is always good to protect the tooth after rct with a crown. Because the tooth  becomes a bit weak after the procedure.  And we eat all the foods including hard items when the tooth is not   paining. Biting on hard food may cause tooth fracture. To avoid the tooth fracture it is advisable to place a cap/crown after rct.

Do we need to frequently do the rct or change the crown

A good root canal & a well fitting crown generally serves for nearly  10+ years. If the crown is loose / there is any gum problem, then the crown should be changed.

Another situation is the pain/swelling  after  few/many  years of rct. Then the tooth needs rerct.

it is very important to have a tight filling, if the rct is done & the crown is not placed. Because in the absence of filling,  food & bacteria enter into the tooth & again infect the tooth. Repeat /re rct is needed in such conditions.

How long the root canal treated teeth lasts.

It should serve for a lifetime if it’s done properly and maintained well by the patient.

Well there is no absolute guarantee for anything…

It depends on many factors. Quality of treatment, materials, techniques &equipment used ,Expertise of the Doctor. General  health of the patient, disease status of the tooth, oral hygiene maintenance by the patient.

TEETH WHITENING: DEFENITION, CAUSES, PROCEDURE

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is the process of removing the stains or reducing the colour shade of the teeth. Teeth can get stained to a yellow colour due to many reasons. For some people their natural colour might be yellow, this treatment is useful for them. This treatment only removes stains and reduces the colour of the teeth by a few shades. It cannot make the teeth completely white but can lighten them by a few shades. It is a cosmetic treatment and due to advanced dental methods it lasts for a longer time.

When will I need teeth whitening?

You will need to do this procedure if your teeth are yellow and are deeply stained. It improves your smile, your overall appearance and the way you present yourself.

Causes:

  • Excessive drinking of coffee, tea, wine, etc.
  • Teeth can stain as you age.
  • Smoking and chewing tobacco.
  • Trauma or shock to the teeth while it was growing.
  • High fluoride intake as a child.

What does the treatment involve?

The treatment takes a few weeks. First the doctor will photograph your teeth so that they can compare the colour after treatment. Then, an impression of your teeth will be taken and a custom mouthpiece will be made to protect the teeth during the days of the treatment. The dentist then starts by cleaning the teeth and removing the top film of the enamel. Then the whitening process will start. This will take anytime between 30-90 minutes depending on the severity of the stain. The doctor then applies a whitening agent. Some of these agents require laser treatment. If your stains are severe then you might need to continue the procedure at home before your next appointment.

How long does it last?

A proper whitening treatment done by a good dentist can last for more than three years. Make sure you get it done by a good dentist.

Other remedies

  • Whitening kits and gels: There are numerous teeth whitening kits available online and in shops. But you must use them with caution as we cannot know if they will damage the teeth. Therefore it is better to go to the dentist for treatment.
  • Baking Soda: Baking soda is known to have whitening properties. Although this remedy does not work overnight you can see the difference with a few weeks of use. To use this remedy, mix 1 teaspoon of baking soda with 2 teaspoons of water and brush your teeth with the paste. You can do this a few times per week.
  • Oil pulling: Swishing oil in your mouth for a few minutes regularly can also help teeth whitening. You can use any oil like Sunflower, sesame, coconut or olive oil. Coconut oil is proven to be the most effective. To oil pull, put 1 tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth and push and pull the oil through your teeth. Coconut oil is solid at room temperature, so you may need to wait a few seconds for it to melt. Continue the oil pulling for 15–20 minutes.
  • Eat fruits and vegetables.
  • Brush and floss well.
  • Get plenty of calcium in your diet.

Although these remedies may work a little they will not be effective for many stains, thus visiting the dentist and getting the treatment done will give you better results and also reduce the risk of damaging your teeth.

10 SIGNS THAT SHOW THAT YOU HAVE TO VISIT TO THE DENTIST

1. Bleeding Gums

If you find that your gums are bleeding when you are brushing or flossing, or if you find blood on your brush or in sink then it is clear that you have gum disease. Sometimes flossing your teeth after a long time can cause slight bleeding for a day or two. Generally, if you have bleeding gums it should stop after two to three days; if it does not, then you will have to visit the dentist immediately.

2. Sensitive teeth

If your tooth feels sensitive whenever you eat and drink something hot or cold then it could mean that something is wrong with your teeth. There could either be cavities in your teeth or sometimes there could be cuts or openings in your gums that could heighten sensitivity and cause infections to be formed.

3. Tooth Pain

If you have severe, continuous tooth pain then it means there is a problem and you would have to visit the dentist immediately. It would generally be severe tooth cavity that needs to be taken care of.

4. Mouth Sores and Bumps

If you find sores and bumps on your cheek or gums you must immediately visit the dentist. It could cause infections or further complications and it could also be signs of oral cancer.

5. Darkening Gums

If you find that your gums are solely darkening to a black colour then it could mean that there are infections inside them or it could be a gum disease. Visiting your dentist at the early stage would make the treatment a lot easier and with lesser pain involved.

6. Loose teeth

If you find that your permanent teeth are loose and shaking then you have to visit the dentist before they fall so that it can be remedied.

7. Broken, Cracked or Chipped Tooth

If your teeth are chipped, broken or cracked, then visit the dentist soon because the sharp edges of the broken teeth can cut your cheeks and gums and that can lead to infections.

8. Swelling in the Gums

If your gums are swollen then it could be a sign that there are infections or cuts in the gum and they require a visit to the dentist.

9. A Filling or Crown that Falls or is Loose

If a filling or crown from a previous treatment is loose or has come off then they should be replaced immediately. The crowns and fillings protect the teeth from germs and infections from entering the teeth and hence should be fixed as soon as possible.

10. Severe Jaw or Ear Pain

If you have severe jaw pain sometimes accompanied by ear pain then it could mean that there are deep cavities or that the wisdom teeth have no space to grow and hence should be shown to the dentist.

WISDOM TOOTH PAIN: CAUSES AND HOME REMEDIES

Wisdom teeth are the third molars of your teeth. They grow between the ages of 17 to 21. They are 4 teeth found at the back of your mouth, one on each side on both the upper and lower jaw.  They are also called adult teeth.

Wisdom tooth pain

If you are between the ages of 17 and 22, there can be sudden pain behind your molars at the end of your mouth, indicating the growth of wisdom teeth. This pain is never prolonged or severe and goes away in a short time. In many cases there is no pain during the growth of wisdom teeth. The presence of pain can most often mean that there is something wrong with the wisdom teeth and therefore needs immediate attention. It is best to visit your doctor if there is pain in your teeth.

Causes of wisdom teeth pain

There are many reasons why the wisdom teeth are paining, some of them are:

  • Growing Pains: Wisdom teeth can pain when they are growing because they are breaching the gums and emerging and that can sometimes cause bleeding, swelling and redness. Brushing regularly and practicing good oral hygiene can enable the wisdom teeth to grow healthy.
  • Lack of growing space: Wisdom teeth that are growing in the wrong direction due to lack of space can cause pain and also damage other teeth.
  • Wisdom teeth that are impacted (found in the jaw and under the gums) can cause pain.
  • Cavities in partially emerged teeth can cause pain.
  • Cysts and tumors in the wisdom teeth.
  • Gum infection due to impacted teeth.

Home remedies or treatments

Although you would have to visit the dentist when your wisdom tooth pains, you can use thes simple home treatments to alleviate your pain in the meantime.

  1. ICE PACKS: An ice pack can be kept on the cheek to temporarily dull or ease the pain.
  1. SALT WATER: Mix a few tablespoons of salt in a glass of freshly boiled salt water and once it becomes lukewarm you can rinse your mouth with it and spit the water out. Salt has a lot of disinfectant properties and can reduce any infections that might be present. You can use salt water 2-3 times a day or until pain reduces.
  1. NUMBING GELS: Dental numbing gels can be used to dull the pain. They are easily available online but have to be used carefully according to the instructions.
  1. CLOVES: Full cloves or clove oil can be used to reduce teeth pain. Take a clove and place it on the tooth that is paining and bite it, keep it in your mouth until the pain reduces. The same thing can be done with a cotton bud dipped in clove oil.
  1. IBUPROFEN: This is a pain relief medicine that reduces inflammation. It can be purchased in a pharmacy and taking the recommended dose on the pack can help reduce pain.

These remedies are simply used to alleviate the pain in your wisdom tooth and cannot provide permanent relief. Make sure to make an appointment with your dentist and visit them as soon as you can if there is pain. The best way to ensure that your wisdom teeth do not cause any problems is to have them extracted.

Braces: Frequently Asked Questions

Why wear braces/clips?

Braces help to straighten crooked and misaligned teeth. They also help to correct overlapping and turned teeth. They also ensure that the teeth in the upper jaw align with the teeth in the lower jaw and that a person has an even bite. Most of all they ensure that a person has a beautiful, confident smile with perfectly aligned teeth.

At what age should I wear braces?

The earlier you wear it the easier it will be to correct the teeth. Dentists can diagnose crooked or misaligned teeth as early as when the child is 7 years old. But there is no age bar as anyone who wants a beautiful smile can avail of this treatment.

How do braces work?

Braces work by putting slow and constant pressure on the teeth and slowly moving them until they turn and are straightened and come to the correct position. It even makes the bones under the teeth to change into the correct shape. For traditional braces, the wire that is attached to the brackets works to put pressure on the teeth to move to a specified direction.

Are braces painful?

Pain is a strong word. When fixing the braces there can be a certain amount of discomfort or soreness that can be felt. Initially  can also feel weird having a foreign material inside your mouth at all times. Over the time you will forget and get used to it. There can be small amounts of pain as the teeth are being moved and which can be relieved by a painkiller. But if pain persists you must visit the dentist.

What are the Types of braces:

There are many types of braces that people can use depending on the severity of the problem and their age and also what they want. Braces generally have brackets that are fitted onto the teeth with metal wires fitted into them and tightened.

  • METAL WIRED BRACES: Most common and traditionally used braces. They consist of metal brackets made of stainless steel and fixed onto the teeth and the metal wires are secured on the brackets using rubber bands.
  • CERAMIC WIRED BRACES: These are also called ‘clear braces’ and are a cosmetic alternative to the traditional braces. Here the brackets are made of ceramic and in the color of the teeth so that they do not stand out much. The downside is that they break easily.
  • LINGUAL BRACES: These braces are placed behind the teeth (the side facing inside the mouth) and are not easily visible. It is basically used for cosmetic purposes and lengthens the time of treatment.
  • CLEAR ALIGNERS: These braces are made of clear plastic and without the use of brackets and wires. These are comfortable to use but the treatment is very limited and cannot be used for more severe cases.

How long should we wear braces?

The length of time one should wear braces varies from person to person. It usually depends on many factors and the dentist will decide that according to the particular patient’s condition. Generally, braces remain on for 1- 1 &1/2 years.

What are retainers?

Retainers are dental appliances that maintain the new position of your teeth after the treatment. This needs to be done because teeth have a tendency to move back into their original positions because the teeth will not be fully fixed and stable.

Retainers are custom made and are made with metal wires and acrylic material. They can either be removable or fixed.

Do I need to wear retainers after braces?

Yes. You must definitely wear retainers after braces, otherwise the teeth that are not stabilized and secure will start moving back to the original position and all the work done will be lost.

How long should we wear retainers?

Retainers should be worn always for 6 months after the braces are removed. And then they should be worn every night while sleeping for a year depending on the severity of the problem.

COSMETIC DENTISTRY: GIVE YOUR TEETH A MAKEOVER

Cosmetic dentistry refers to dental procedures that improve the appearance of teeth and gums. These procedures are used to make the teeth white, aligned and in perfect shape in order to give you a beautiful smile. If your teeth are stained, worn, discolored, misshapen, chipped, broken, misaligned, or have gaps between them, the modern cosmetic dentistry can correct all those problems.
Even though cosmetic dentistry is used only to make the teeth look beautiful, many people are now opting for these services in order to increase their confidence by improving the appearance of their teeth and smile and the way they present themselves to others. It is one of the fields in dentistry that is fast gaining popularity as the visual appearance of a person is also important part of being prominent in today’s society.
Here at Praveen Dental, we offer a variety of cosmetic procedures at affordable costs. We offer procedures such as Teeth Whitening, Dental Veneers, Composite Resin Restorations, Dental Crowns and Tooth Bridges, In-lays and On-lays.

1. Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is the process of removing stains from the surface of the teeth and restoring the natural color. It involves bleaching the enamel of the teeth to make them lighter. It is done in one sitting and is the most common and widely adopted procedure. The enamel of the teeth can discolor or stain and become yellow.
There are many causes of tooth discoloration like frequent consumption of coffee, tea, wine, etc., smoking, chewing tobacco, fluorosis, damage or trauma when permanent teeth are growing and ageing. The process of Teeth Whitening clears the stain and makes your teeth look whiter. However, one should keep in mind that the results may vary from person to person.

2. Dental Veneers

Dental veneers also known as porcelain veneers are wafer-thin shells or coverings for the tooth that are custom made to perfectly fit and cover the front surface of the teeth to improve their appearance. They are permanently bonded to your teeth. This procedure is done when a person has chipped or broken teeth, when the teeth are discolored or when the front teeth are of different sizes and are misaligned. They are also used mostly to correct the appearance of the top front teeth that are the most visible when a person smiles and make them appear symmetrical and of the same size.

3. Composite Resin Restorations

Composites are tooth colored resins that are used to restore broken, chipped, decayed, discolored or fractured tooth. Unlike dental veneers which involves a careful process of construction of the laminates, these composite resin can be easily used in tooth bonding procedures. It can be completed in one visit and is the easiest and least expensive of the cosmetic dentistry procedures.

4. Dental Crowns and Tooth Bridges

Dental crowns and tooth bridges are permanent solutions to badly damaged or missing teeth. These are restorative procedures that use prosthetic or artificial materials to restore the teeth. A crown is used when the teeth are badly damaged or broken and bridges are used when there are one or more missing teeth (especially in cases where the permanent teeth have fallen).

A crown is a manufactured teeth that has the same texture, size and color of your existing teeth and is generally made of porcelain, ceramic or gold alloys. The existing weak, damaged, decayed and broken tooth is filed down and made smaller and the decay is removed and the crown is placed over the teeth like a cap and cemented into position.
A bridge replaces missing tooth and are usually made of porcelain fused to metal. A bridge consists of false teeth rigidly attached between two crowns. The teeth on either side of the gap are prepared for these crowns and the bridge is cemented into place. It looks and works just like natural teeth.

5. Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and onlays are indirect dental restorations that are made outside of your mouth in a laboratory. An inlay or onlay is typically used when a cavity is too large for a simple filling. They are recommended when there is tooth decay and when you want to preserve your natural tooth as much as possible.

Oral Hygiene: Keeping Your Teeth Healthy

Keeping our teeth healthy is as important as having a healthy body. Healthy, sparkling, white teeth makes a person more outgoing and boosts their confidence. Research shows that oral health is more than just healthy gums and teeth; it also affects our overall health.

A lifestyle without proper oral practices causes tooth ache, cavities, increased sensitivity and gum problems. These issues may lead to malnutrition, speech problems, and other challenges in a person’s work, school, or personal life.
These are a few oral practices that can be incorporated into your daily routine in order to have healthy teeth and gums.

1. Brush twice a day:

Brushing your teeth twice a day especially before going to bed is very important. Brushing before sleeping helps remove the food particles and acids deposited on and between your teeth throughout the day. Also do not rush, brush carefully and at least for 2 minutes. It is also important to remember to clean your tongue with either the tooth brush or the tongue cleaner.

2. Do not brush aggressively:

Do not brush your teeth too hard or very aggressively as it can cause your gums to bleed. Also using a brush with soft bristles will help to avoid bleeding of gums and causing abrasions or cuts in your mouth. Hold your toothbrush at a slight angle — aiming the bristles toward the area where your tooth meets your gum. Gently brush with circular short back-and-forth motions.

3. Caring for your toothbrush:

Always rinse your brush after use and keep it upright allowing it to dry and also not touch other brushes.
You must also know when to replace your brushes. Ideally your brushes must be replaced every three months or sooner when the bristles start to flay.

4. Use fluoride toothpaste:

Use toothpaste that contains fluoride. Although fluoride has come under scrutiny as to how it affects other areas of health, it is an important part of oral health. Fluoride helps defend against tooth decay by fighting germs and also forming a protective barrier for your teeth.

5. Flossing is important:

Flossing is as important as brushing your teeth as it can get between your tooth crevices and clean between your teeth. And not only that, it also helps to stimulate the gums, reduce plaque, and help lower inflammation in the area.

6. Use a mouthwash:

Mouthwashes help to bring things into balance: It reduces the acidity in the mouth, re-mineralizes the teeth and helps clean the hard to reach areas around the gums and teeth.

7. Limit the intake of sugary and acidic foods:

Our diet also contributes to the health of our teeth and gums. Sugar converts to acid in our mouths and these acids that erode the enamel in our teeth ultimately causing cavities. Beverages like tea, coffee and soda also contribute in eroding our enamel. Although you do not need to avoid these foods it is always good to be mindful of the amount consumed.

8. Replace sugary beverages with water:

Water is the best beverage for your overall health. Replacing sugary juices and soda is not only good for your teeth but also for your overall body health.

9. Do not smoke:

Smoking harms the body’s immune system, which makes it difficult for the body to heal tissues, including those in the mouth. Smoking also affects the appearance of the mouth, leading to yellowing of the teeth and tongue, and it can give breath a bad odor.

10. Visit a dentist at least twice a year:

Experts recommend that a person should visit the dentist at least once every 6 months. During a check up, a dentist will clean the teeth and remove plaque and hardened tartar. You will also be checked for visual signs of cavities, gum disease, mouth cancer, and other oral health issues.
Research shows that children who have dental check-up every 6 months are likely to prevent cavities from developing. Adults who practice good oral hygiene can go less frequently to the dentist.
We at Praveen Dental offer the best services in safe environments following the standard safety procedures and also provide the latest technologies that dentistry has to offer at affordable pricing. We are committed to caring for your oral health and will give good services.

Dental Select Wisdom Teeth

WISDOM TEETH: Signs That You Have To Visit the Dentist

Wisdom teeth are the third and last set of 4 molars that grow during your late teens and twenties (adult teeth). They are at the very back of your mouth on the upper and lower jaws on both sides. Healthy wisdom teeth help to chew food but deformed teeth or pain while emerging needs an urgent visit to the dentist.

Why are they called wisdom teeth?

They are called wisdom teeth not because they make you smarter but because they usually grow when you are older. They grow around 17 to 21 years of age. You get two on top and two below and they complete the set of 32 teeth that an adult must have.

Why are some tooth partially formed?

They most often do not have enough space to grow and are not formed properly or sometimes some of the 4 teeth do not come out of the gums at all. Most times it is accompanied by pain or discomfort while trying to grow and they also take a few years until they finish emerging. Most often they are deformed and also only partially appear out of the gums.

Why do they pain when they grow?

There is usually a slight discomfort when they grow but often times there is a lot of pain involved. This can prove to be dangerous and hence needs to be addressed without delay. The most common problem is the lack of space for the teeth to grow. This can lead to impacted wisdom teeth (teeth trapped in the jaw or under the gums). This can also lead to the teeth growing in the wrong position and damaging other teeth.

What happens when the teeth have no place to grow?

  • Teeth trapped under the gums (impacted teeth).
  • The tooth can grow in the wrong direction and damage other teeth.
  • Wisdom teeth that grow in the wrong position allow for gaps between the teeth and gums that can cause food to get stuck there leading to increased bacterial activity which in turn causes cavities.
  • Since there is not enough space, it makes it difficult to clean, floss or brush between and around the teeth.
  • Cyst can be formed near or on an impacted teeth that is buried under the gums or only partially sticking out. This can cause damage to the bone or to the neighboring teeth.

Do you have to remove your wisdom tooth?

Wisdom teeth generally need constant monitoring to see that they grow properly and do not get damaged. When there are certain changes in your mouth due to the wisdom teeth then it means that they have to be removed. These are a few symptoms

  • When there is pain.
  • If the teeth are growing in the wrong position.
  • They damage other teeth.
  • When wisdom teeth chip off and are disfigured.
  • If they have emerged only partially.
  • If there are cavities.
  • When there are cysts and tumors.
  • If the wisdom teeth are impacted.
  • When the teeth are infected and if there are gum diseases.

What are the treatments available?

Most often doctors recommend that wisdom teeth have to be extracted if there is too much damage that cannot restore the teeth. Extraction involves numbing the area around the teeth and pulling the teeth out using forceps.
Sometimes, surgical extraction is recommended especially for impacted teeth that are under the gums and tumors and cysts.
Here at Praveen Dental, our experienced doctor uses cutting edge technology for assessing and treating problems involving wisdom teeth. Patients can avail a variety of services including extractions and surgeries.
