Oral Hygiene: Keeping Your Teeth Healthy

Keeping our teeth healthy is as important as having a healthy body. Healthy, sparkling, white teeth makes a person more outgoing and boosts their confidence. Research shows that oral health is more than just healthy gums and teeth; it also affects our overall health.

A lifestyle without proper oral practices causes tooth ache, cavities, increased sensitivity and gum problems. These issues may lead to malnutrition, speech problems, and other challenges in a person’s work, school, or personal life.
These are a few oral practices that can be incorporated into your daily routine in order to have healthy teeth and gums.

1. Brush twice a day:

Brushing your teeth twice a day especially before going to bed is very important. Brushing before sleeping helps remove the food particles and acids deposited on and between your teeth throughout the day. Also do not rush, brush carefully and at least for 2 minutes. It is also important to remember to clean your tongue with either the tooth brush or the tongue cleaner.

2. Do not brush aggressively:

Do not brush your teeth too hard or very aggressively as it can cause your gums to bleed. Also using a brush with soft bristles will help to avoid bleeding of gums and causing abrasions or cuts in your mouth. Hold your toothbrush at a slight angle — aiming the bristles toward the area where your tooth meets your gum. Gently brush with circular short back-and-forth motions.

3. Caring for your toothbrush:

Always rinse your brush after use and keep it upright allowing it to dry and also not touch other brushes.
You must also know when to replace your brushes. Ideally your brushes must be replaced every three months or sooner when the bristles start to flay.

4. Use fluoride toothpaste:

Use toothpaste that contains fluoride. Although fluoride has come under scrutiny as to how it affects other areas of health, it is an important part of oral health. Fluoride helps defend against tooth decay by fighting germs and also forming a protective barrier for your teeth.

5. Flossing is important:

Flossing is as important as brushing your teeth as it can get between your tooth crevices and clean between your teeth. And not only that, it also helps to stimulate the gums, reduce plaque, and help lower inflammation in the area.

6. Use a mouthwash:

Mouthwashes help to bring things into balance: It reduces the acidity in the mouth, re-mineralizes the teeth and helps clean the hard to reach areas around the gums and teeth.

7. Limit the intake of sugary and acidic foods:

Our diet also contributes to the health of our teeth and gums. Sugar converts to acid in our mouths and these acids that erode the enamel in our teeth ultimately causing cavities. Beverages like tea, coffee and soda also contribute in eroding our enamel. Although you do not need to avoid these foods it is always good to be mindful of the amount consumed.

8. Replace sugary beverages with water:

Water is the best beverage for your overall health. Replacing sugary juices and soda is not only good for your teeth but also for your overall body health.

9. Do not smoke:

Smoking harms the body’s immune system, which makes it difficult for the body to heal tissues, including those in the mouth. Smoking also affects the appearance of the mouth, leading to yellowing of the teeth and tongue, and it can give breath a bad odor.

10. Visit a dentist at least twice a year:

Experts recommend that a person should visit the dentist at least once every 6 months. During a check up, a dentist will clean the teeth and remove plaque and hardened tartar. You will also be checked for visual signs of cavities, gum disease, mouth cancer, and other oral health issues.
Research shows that children who have dental check-up every 6 months are likely to prevent cavities from developing. Adults who practice good oral hygiene can go less frequently to the dentist.
