TEETH WHITENING: DEFENITION, CAUSES, PROCEDURE

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is the process of removing the stains or reducing the colour shade of the teeth. Teeth can get stained to a yellow colour due to many reasons. For some people their natural colour might be yellow, this treatment is useful for them. This treatment only removes stains and reduces the colour of the teeth by a few shades. It cannot make the teeth completely white but can lighten them by a few shades. It is a cosmetic treatment and due to advanced dental methods it lasts for a longer time.

When will I need teeth whitening?

You will need to do this procedure if your teeth are yellow and are deeply stained. It improves your smile, your overall appearance and the way you present yourself.

Causes:

  • Excessive drinking of coffee, tea, wine, etc.
  • Teeth can stain as you age.
  • Smoking and chewing tobacco.
  • Trauma or shock to the teeth while it was growing.
  • High fluoride intake as a child.

What does the treatment involve?

The treatment takes a few weeks. First the doctor will photograph your teeth so that they can compare the colour after treatment. Then, an impression of your teeth will be taken and a custom mouthpiece will be made to protect the teeth during the days of the treatment. The dentist then starts by cleaning the teeth and removing the top film of the enamel. Then the whitening process will start. This will take anytime between 30-90 minutes depending on the severity of the stain. The doctor then applies a whitening agent. Some of these agents require laser treatment. If your stains are severe then you might need to continue the procedure at home before your next appointment.

How long does it last?

A proper whitening treatment done by a good dentist can last for more than three years. Make sure you get it done by a good dentist.

Other remedies

  • Whitening kits and gels: There are numerous teeth whitening kits available online and in shops. But you must use them with caution as we cannot know if they will damage the teeth. Therefore it is better to go to the dentist for treatment.
  • Baking Soda: Baking soda is known to have whitening properties. Although this remedy does not work overnight you can see the difference with a few weeks of use. To use this remedy, mix 1 teaspoon of baking soda with 2 teaspoons of water and brush your teeth with the paste. You can do this a few times per week.
  • Oil pulling: Swishing oil in your mouth for a few minutes regularly can also help teeth whitening. You can use any oil like Sunflower, sesame, coconut or olive oil. Coconut oil is proven to be the most effective. To oil pull, put 1 tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth and push and pull the oil through your teeth. Coconut oil is solid at room temperature, so you may need to wait a few seconds for it to melt. Continue the oil pulling for 15–20 minutes.
  • Eat fruits and vegetables.
  • Brush and floss well.
  • Get plenty of calcium in your diet.

Although these remedies may work a little they will not be effective for many stains, thus visiting the dentist and getting the treatment done will give you better results and also reduce the risk of damaging your teeth.
