Dental Implants

Dental Implants are metal frames or posts like a tooth root that are positioned into your jawbone beneath the gums through surgery. These may be an option if you have lost your tooth or teeth due to an injury, periodontal diseases, or other dental reasons. They also benefit your overall oral health because, unlike bridges, they are not anchored to other teeth. In case you are considering dental implants, your gums must be healthy and have adequate bone to support the implant. If your bone is too thin or soft and indicates that it may not be able to support an implant, your doctor might recommend a bone graft. Further, if there is not an adequate bone height in the upper jaw or if the sinuses are too close to the jaw, you might require a sinus lift.

Types Of Dental Implants

Dental Implants are mainly of two types, and your dentist will recommend the best suitable type for your teeth.

These implants, done in the bone, are implanted directly into your jawbone via surgery. Once the surrounding gum tissue heals, a second surgery will be required to connect a post to the original implant. Lastly, an artificial tooth or teeth will be attached to the post, either individually or grouped on a bridge or denture.
Endosteal implants are generally used as an alternative for those who have bridges or removable dentures.

These dental implants, done on the bone, consist of a metal frame that will be fitted onto your jawbone right beneath the gum tissue. As the gums get healed, the frame becomes fixed to the jawbone. Posts that are fixed to the frame will protrude through the gums. After this takes place, the doctor will then mount artificial teeth to the posts.
Subperiosteal implants are generally recommended for those who have a minimal bone height or cannot wear the traditional dentures.

Although your dental implant will be successful, there are always a few tips that you must follow in order to retain their strength and support their longevity. Make it a habit to brush twice daily and floss your teeth regularly to help clean the areas that your toothbrush might not be able to reach. If you are a smoker, then quit now as smoking only risks more damage to your implants and in the long run, your teeth. Visit your dentist regularly and take examinations to ensure your implants are in good condition and also oral health is well maintained. Lastly, avoid chewing on hard foods as they can weaken or break the crown.
